- In 1887, Homère Clément acquired the Acajou estate. In 1917, Homère Clément built his distillery on the ruins of the old sugar refinery. Charles Clément, Homère Clément's son, devoted himself to developing the distillery, which he inherited with his sisters in 1923. They modernised the facilities, working to improve the quality of its agricultural rums.
In 1986, GBH acquired the estate. Major changes have taken place since then:
- The main house, listed as a ‘historic monument’ in 1996, was restored in 2003, giving visitors an opportunity to experience the tropical way of life and discover the traditional architecture and furnishings of a large Creole house.
- 2005 Distillation stopped and was transferred to the Simon factory - The old distillery became a centre for the interpretation of rum, with all the stages in the transformation of sugar cane right through to the ageing cellars. All the machinery has been preserved and restored to its former glory.
- 2013 A contemporary art centre and gallery: More than 200 artists have already been welcomed to this venue, which is open free of charge to the public and to schools. The foundation promotes local and Caribbean artists in support of the arts and cultural heritage in Martinique.
- On this 16-hectare estate, the garden, awarded the ‘Remarkable Garden’ label in 2015, has been completely transformed into an open-air art gallery. Its tropical vegetation and carefully scattered sculptures create a unique dialogue between nature and artists.
- 2023 À L’Atelier des Sens, Vous Plongerez dans l’univers sensoriel et olfactif des rhums Clément, entre dégustation et éveil de tous vos sens.
