Zoo of Martinique - Habitation Anse Latouche

Park and garden, Botanical gardens in Le Carbet
17,5 Full-fare
  • One of Martinique's most beautiful gardens is located in Le Carbet, at the Habitation Anse Latouche. It is also the only new-generation Jardin-Zoologique on the island.

Founded in 1643, the Habitation was partly destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Pelée on 8 May 1902. The ruins, which are still visible and well-preserved, were used by Jean-Philippe Thoze (creator of the Jardin de Balata) to create an extraordinary garden.

Since 2014, this zoological garden has been showcasing the ruins and heritage of this magical site, with its ornamental pool, its water reservoir and aqueduct, its old distillery, its mill mechanism, its indigoterie, its manioc factory, its forge, its cane slides...

    The garden :
In the early 2000s, Jean-Philippe THOZE restored the Habitation Anse Latouche. Like a painter, he imagined a garden different from that of the Jardin de Balata. The climate is warmer and drier, and the plants are different.

The zoological garden is an arid tropical garden with an incredible collection of cacti and succulents, whereas the Jardin de Balata is a humid tropical garden. The site is a delight for lovers of beautiful gardens. This astonishing plant composition will become pictorial, with a striking beauty and a powerful exoticism whose hues stand out against the blue of the tropical sky.

Today, the place is unique and the sensations are timeless, as the history of the site combines the life of a Habitation of yesteryear, its rebirth and the creation of a zoological garden.
