The Habitation Clément in Le François offers a chance to immerse yourself in Martinique's heritage and Creole way of life. The tour is divided into five worlds. From the garden to the museum, via the manor house, the old distillery, the Rhums Clément cellars and the Atelier des Sens.
It's one of the most visited "top sites" in Martinique. -
Habitation Clément in Le François is much more than just a distillery: it's a journey back in time. Within its 160 hectares, it houses the main house, built on the Acajou estate, which was home to the Clément family from 1887 to 1986.
Listed as a historic monument since 1996, it has been carefully restored, preserving its old-world charm and architectural heritage. Listed as a historic monument since 1996, it has been carefully restored, preserving its old-world charm and architectural heritage. Perched on a morne hill, it overlooks the entire site, with a view of the park, gardens, old distillery and buildings dotted around the property.
Its 'wasp-waisted' silhouette is distinguished by its timber facade and scaly roof. The ground floor features the central lounge and reception room, as well as side galleries adapted to the tropical climate of the West Indies. Upstairs is the sleeping area with its large bedrooms, study, bathroom and utility room.
The house opens onto a shaded terrace. From there, a courtyard leads to the outbuildings: the stable, the kitchen, the "case de l'économe" renamed "case Bush-Mitterrand" in homage to the 1991 Franco-American summit, and the former carriage house transformed into "case à Léo".
Each element of Habitation Clément tells a fascinating story, offering visitors an authentic and immersive experience of the traditional Creole way of life. It's a true cultural treasure to be discovered or rediscovered on your visit to Martinique.
