The manor house at Habitation Clément, in Le François, is one of the estate’s most iconic buildings. Listed as a historic monument since 1996, it exemplifies traditional Creole architecture and the way of life on a Martinican plantation.
Inside, the tour takes visitors through the central living room, the reception room, the bedrooms, the period furniture and various items relating to domestic life. Each room tells a part of the story of the estate and those who lived there.
Surrounding the main house, the outbuildings round off the tour: the old kitchen, the stables, the steward’s cottage, the carriage house and other ancillary spaces. The cottage known as the ‘Bush-Mitterrand’ cottage is a reminder of the Franco-American meeting held on the site in 1991.
The manor house thus offers an immersion in the architectural, family and cultural heritage of Martinique. It is an essential stop for understanding the history of Habitation Clément beyond its connection with rum.
