Caribbean South " Discovery Tour
I’ve chosen the 3-hour “Caraïbe Sud” discovery walk, to explore the coastline and its natural attractions. Departure is at 8 a.m. from the Cap Chevalier pontoon. There are about ten of us this morning. Bébêche is there to greet us with his broad smile and a kind word for everyone. That’s it, the atmosphere is already there! A few explanations, safety instructions and on-board rules, and we’re off!

To the sound of pounding music, we leave the bay, pass the îlet Chevalier and head forAnse Michel, one of my favorite beaches with its turquoise lagoon, coral reef and coconut grove. Superb at this time of day! Then on to Sainte-Anne, its beaches and islets. Bébêche gets as close as possible to the mangrove swamps of Baie des Anglais, with their mangroves and wildlife.
We then follow the coast into the Réserve naturelle des îlets de Sainte-Anne ( Hardy, Burgaux, Percé and Poirier islets), one of Martinique’s most important protected bird breeding and nesting sites. Ospreys, redshanks, bridled and tailedterns can all be spotted here.

Bebeche Captain Christian Murat Sainte-Anne MartiniqueWe pass offAnse Trabaud, a beach famous for its rollers that are a delight for bodyboarders, and approach the Table du Diable. This 11-metre-high rocky islet owes its name to its rectangular table shape and the crashing Atlantic waves that break relentlessly on its rocks. As a keen sailor, Bébêche is well acquainted with the Passage du Diable, which we pass through with ease. It separates the Atlantic from the Caribbean Sea, and we end up on the other side, opposite Cabrits islet.

We continue on to Pointe Borgnèse andAnse Figuier, then begin the return journey. Even if we don’t make it today, Bébêche tells ushe can also take groups as far as Rocher du Diamant. At the end of the morning, we enjoy an aperitif (ti-punch, planteur, juice) and a snack on the white bottom of îlet Chevalier, where we take a dip in 30° water. Back at the pontoon around midday, everyone on board is laughing and on familiar terms – it’s the “Bébêche effect”, the joie de vivre!
