Aqua XS in Le Robert: aquaculture farm, mangrove forest and Chancel Islet Setting off from Pointe Savane, Aqua XS takes you on a tour of Le Robert Bay with Xavier, an aquaculturist and skipper with a passion for the marine environment. This small-group excursion combines an insight into the profession, sailing amongst the islets, exploring the mangroves, swimming at the ‘fonds blancs’ and, depending on the package chosen, a stopover on Chancel Islet. The trip offers an understanding of the landscapes, ecosystems and activities that shape Martinique’s Atlantic coast.

A tour led by a fish farmer Xavier shares his experience as a producer, his daily life at sea and his knowledge of Robert Bay. Whilst sailing, he explains how the coastline has changed and the role of the various natural habitats. With a maximum of eight passengers on board, conversation flows easily and everyone can get involved. The trip is ideal for families, couples and small groups keen to discover an authentic local side of Martinique.

Visit the Aqua XS aquaculture farm The offshore aquaculture farm is one of the highlights of the excursion. Xavier breeds the Caribbean wolf fish, also known as the ocellated croaker, there. He outlines the main stages of his work: the arrival of the fry, feeding, the fish’s growth, monitoring the cages, checking the facilities and marketing. Depending on the programme, visitors can view the equipment and watch the fish being fed. The explanations provide a better understanding of how a Martinique aquaculture farm operates, as well as the expertise required to produce locally whilst working in harmony with the rhythms of the sea.

Exploring the mangroves at Le Robert The boat then continues on its way to the mangrove forest. Xavier introduces the mangroves, their roots and their role in protecting the coastline and providing a refuge for many species. Juvenile fish, crabs and birds find ideal areas here to feed, grow or breed. This educational stop is suitable for children and offers a fresh perspective on a landscape often observed without understanding how it works.

Swimming at the ‘fonds blancs’ Depending on the itinerary, the trip heads for the ‘fonds blancs’ of Le Robert, notably the ‘fond blanc du Trapèze’. Passengers then enjoy a swim in clear, shallow water. A light snack is served during this relaxing break.

Discovering Chancel Islet Xavier discusses the site’s former activities on Chancel Islet, notably the sugar plantation and lime production. The islet is also home to a protected population of Lesser Antilles iguanas.

Half-day tour (9.30 am to 12.30 pm or 1 pm to 4 pm): €50 per adult and €40 per child (under 12)
Full day (9.30 am to 4.30 pm) with lunch on a private islet: €90 per adult and €65 per child (under 12)
