In 1917, Homère Clément had a distillery built on the ruins of the estate’s former sugar mill. This milestone marked the development of agricultural rum production and firmly established the Clément name in the history of Martinique rum.
From 1923 onwards, Charles Clément, Homère’s son, continued to develop the business alongside his sisters. The facilities were modernised, the quality of the rums improved, and the Clément brand gradually established itself as a benchmark for agricultural rum.
In 1986, the estate was acquired by GBH. This new era marked a significant transformation for Habitation Clément. The site gradually evolved into a place for visitors to explore, remember and celebrate Martinique’s heritage.
The main house was listed as a historic monument in 1996, then restored in 2003. Today, it allows visitors to discover traditional Creole architecture, period furniture and the lifestyle of a grand Caribbean plantation house.
In 2005, distillation ceased at the site and was transferred to the Simon distillery. The former distillery was then preserved and converted into an interpretative trail. The machinery, cellars and industrial buildings stand as a testament to the history of agricultural rum and Martinican craftsmanship.
The Clément Foundation, established in 2005, has brought a new cultural dimension to the estate. It supports artistic creation, promotes heritage and hosts exhibitions dedicated in particular to artists from Martinique and the Caribbean.
In 2015, the garden at Habitation Clément was awarded the ‘Jardin remarquable’ designation. Its landscaped areas, contemporary sculptures, palm grove and tropical biodiversity now make it a place for strolling and enjoying art in the open air.
The history of Habitation Clément continues to unfold through its visitor areas, exhibitions, art gallery, gardens and rum-themed tours. From its origins as a former agricultural estate to its current status as a cultural site, it tells the story of over a century of Martinican history.
