Habitation Céron – Remarkable garden, chocolate and restaurant in Martinique A 17th-century plantation house, Habitation Céron is a former sugar factory founded in 1658, located in Le Prêcheur, in northern Martinique. Nestled between the sea and the river, close to the beaches of Anse Céron and Anse Couleuvre, it is now a remarkable heritage site. The site has been labelled a ‘Remarkable Garden’ since 2016 and offers a unique immersion in the heart of the Caribbean.

Park and garden A visit to Habitation Céron invites you to discover a tropical park of striking exuberance. Rivers, ponds and a tropical garden punctuate the walk. The highlight of the site is undoubtedly the majestic zamana, also known as the ‘rain tree’. Over 300 years old, it was voted ‘France’s most beautiful tree in 2016’. Visitors can observe a rich and varied array of wildlife and may even spot the matoutou falaise, a tree-dwelling tarantula endemic to the West Indies. Beyond the botanical tour, Habitation Céron is firmly committed to an agri-tourism approach. * Last tours depart at 4.30 pm.

La Fabrique de Julie – Chocolates from Habitation Céron Julie Marraud des Grottes has revived cocoa cultivation and the production of exceptional artisanal chocolate, sourced directly from the Martinique terroir of Habitation Céron. Adopting a ‘from tree to bar’ approach, she oversees every stage: growing the cocoa trees, harvesting the pods, fermentation, drying and processing the beans. The result: a tropical dark chocolate, intense and aromatic, characterised by the flavours of the Northern Caribbean. Committed to a sustainable and agri-tourism approach, Julie also makes full use of the entire cocoa pod, with no waste, and is playing a part in the revival of Martinique’s cocoa industry. ‘Céron’ chocolates can be discovered and savoured on site, at the plantation’s restaurant or at the La Réserve Créole shop in Saint-Pierre, a true showcase of local expertise.

The restaurant The restaurant at Habitation Céron extends the experience with cuisine that celebrates local produce. Set beneath a carbet, the restaurant showcases local produce and fresh fruit juices, largely sourced from the garden, to be enjoyed on the premises or taken away.

NB:The ruins of the plantation are currently being restored and are not open to visitors.
