The Industrial Heritage of Fonds-Préville and Rhum J.M
The Fonds-Préville estate in Macouba stands as an important testament to Martinique’s industrial rum heritage. Linked to Rhum J.M, this site tells a story of plantations, sugar cane, machinery, expertise and the passing down of traditions.
The estate’s history dates back to the late 18th century. In 1790, Antoine Leroux-Préville acquired this property in the north of the island. The estate was then named Fonds-Préville. Later, Jean-Marie Martin, a merchant in Saint-Pierre, converted the sugar mill into a distillery and gave the brand the name J.M., using his initials.
The site preserves the memory of this industrial evolution: wheels, stills, production facilities, ageing cellars and traces of the estate’s former layout. These elements bear witness to the gradual adaptation of Martinican plantations to the production of agricultural rum.
Situated at the foot of Mount Pelée, the distillery benefits from a unique terroir. The volcanic soil, water, climate and sugarcane cultivation have all contributed to shaping the identity of J.M. Rum. The renovation of the site has made it possible to showcase this heritage whilst modernising the production facilities. Today, the Fonds-Préville estate remains a place where industrial heritage, rum culture and respect for the environment come together.
