The baroque church, built by the Jesuits, was destroyed many times by cyclones and earthquakes, followed by reconstruction.
It was also burnt down by the English in 1762 and rebuilt by the Dominicans. The bell tower of the church, repaired in 1861 and the 20th century, included three bells called Josephine, Louise and Caroline, on which were engraved the names of the godparents.
Major renovation work took place in the late 1950s on the bell tower, walls and roof. In 1990, after the nave had been restored, the bell tower was completely dismantled and a new wapa (Guyanese wood) roof was laid.
In the 2010s, insulation of walls and floors was undertaken. In 2011, interior repairs began to restore this beautiful church to its former glory.
