Description
The tour is organised around several areas: an exhibition, a tropical park, a banana plantation, a craft village and a restaurant.
An exhibition dedicated to the history of the banana At the heart of the former plantation house, the permanent exhibition traces the fascinating history of the banana. Here you’ll discover: • the plant’s origins • its introduction to the West Indies in 1516 • the development of its cultivation in Martinique • its role in the local and global economy.
The illustrated panels also explain: • farming techniques • the different varieties grown • the many uses of bananas. The tour ends with a short tasting session, which is always popular with visitors.
Exploring the plantation by buggy The museum has recently started offering a guided buggy tour through the plantation. This excursion allows you to explore several hectares of crops and drive right through the heart of the rows of banana trees. Accompanied by a guide, you’ll discover: • how a farm is organised • modern farming techniques • the day-to-day work of the growers.
A unique activity that perfectly complements a visit to the museum and the tropical park.
A Creole village centred around bananas The site also features a small village comprising several Creole huts. Here you’ll find: • a shop selling banana-based products: liqueurs, punches, jams, flour and dried bananas • temporary exhibitions • a video room dedicated to bananas. Before you leave, do take the time to pop into the shop to pick up a few tasty souvenirs.
