Banana Museum in Sainte-Marie
Located in Sainte-Marie, in northern Martinique, the Banana Museum invites you to discover the fascinating world of the world's most widely consumed tropical fruit. Housed on the grounds of Habitation Limbé, a former 18th-century sugar plantation, the site offers an immersive experience combining agricultural heritage, botany and Creole cuisine.
The visit is divided into several areas: exhibition, tropical park, banana plantation, craft village and restaurant.
An exhibition dedicated to the history of bananas:
In the heart of the old plantation house, the permanent exhibition traces the amazing history of bananas.
You will discover:
• the origin of the plant
• its introduction to the West Indies in 1516
• the evolution of its cultivation in Martinique
• its role in the local and global economy.
The illustrated panels also explain:
• agricultural techniques
• the different varieties grown
• the many uses of bananas.
The tour ends with a small tasting, which is always appreciated by visitors.
Explore the plantation by buggy
The museum has recently started offering guided buggy tours of the plantation.
This excursion allows you to explore several hectares of crops and drive through the rows of banana trees. Accompanied by a guide, you will discover:
• how a farm is organised
• modern farming techniques
• the daily work of producers.
This unique activity perfectly complements a visit to the museum and tropical park.
A Creole village centred around bananas
The site also includes a small village made up of several Creole huts. Here you will find:
• a shop selling banana-based products: liqueurs, punches, jams, flour, dried bananas
• temporary exhibitions
• a video room dedicated to bananas.
Before you leave,
La Bananeraie Restaurant
On site, La Bananeraie restaurant offers original Creole cuisine featuring bananas in everything from starters to desserts. It's a great opportunity to extend your visit with a gourmet break on the restaurant terrace. (The restaurant's opening hours are different from those of the museum.)
Museum opening hours: closes at 5pm – last admission at 4pm
