How to prepare your hike ?

In Martinique, a land of hiking, some basic safety rules should be followed, even more so than elsewhere. The climate, the weather, the hurricane season can change the topography and make a simple route more complicated. So be careful to make the most of our beautiful nature!

Getting equipped right.

Even for a so-called “easy” hike, a minimum of precautions and equipment is required in Martinique especially if you are arriving from metropolitan France and are unfamiliar with nature and the tropical climate!

Some essentials in your backpack:

  • Water in quantity because it is very hot (min. 2 liters per person)
  • Very high SPF50 waterproof sunscreen
  • Hat/cap
  • Sunglasses
  • 1 warm garment and a waterproof windbreaker
  • A change of clothes and swimsuit
  • Lightweight walking shoes, notched and waterproof
  • Supplies (fruit, energy bars)
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Your cell phone, a camera
  • Golden survival blanket, a small knife

NEVER GO HIKING ALONE!

It seems obvious but it’s worth remembering!

Watch the weather.

In Martinique, the weather can be very changeable during the course of a single day. If rain is forecast, it is best to postpone your hike. Ditto after heavy rains, the trail may have suffered from rising water. Plan the duration

The durations indicated are averages, take into account your level of hiker, your state of fitness and endurance… Some hikes are long and tiring. Prefer an early start in the morning because in the West Indies night falls very quickly (around 6pm).

Prepare the return trip: Some routes are loops, others require transportation upon arrival, for some you will have to take the same route as the outward journey in reverse…

The Comité de la Randonnée pédestre de la Martinique organizes guided walks and hikes regularly. The Bureau de la randonnée et du canyoning , Rando A2PASoffers you its state-certified mountain guides to help you discover the island’s countless natural riches.
