A restaurant in Fort de Francein the heart of the city

Stopover at The Yellow

Today I had the chance to chat with Gabriel Manon, “Gaby ” to the regulars, the owner of one of Fort de France‘s finest restaurants. I’m talking about the Yellow restaurant, of course! It’s a must-visit address right in the center of town, on rue Victor Hugo, upstairs. You could pass by without seeing it, and that would be a shame.

Restaurant The Yellow

In the heart of downtown Fort-de-France

This charming restaurant has been delighting its (very) many loyal customers for 10 years now. I’ve been following it since the beginning, and the place has really evolved. Gabriel has succeeded in making it a unique and very welcoming place. Theatmosphere is intimate, and the service meticulous.

I’m curious to know what his recipe for success is, even if I already know that the food here is always very good…for being a loyal reader of the Bois Lélé guide.

Meeting with Gabriel

Gabriel, can you tell us how you managed to become a benchmark restaurant?

“After years spent in large establishments, I wanted to create my own restaurant, a place on a human scale, with a cosy atmosphere, a warm welcome, good service and, of course, good food!

That’s my vision of a good restaurant, and 10 years later, I’d say I’ve achieved what I set out to do. The location may have seemed unlikely. Thanks to positive customer feedback, word-of-mouth quickly spread.

We were awarded the Qualité Tourisme and Maître Restaurateur labels.”

A cosy restaurant

It’s true that you’ll feel right at home at Yellow! The golden yellow (you get the reference!) matches the crimson red, the tables are covered with tablecloths, the armchairs are super-comfortable, the lighting is subdued, and some of the dishes are served under cloche. Gabriel’s service is attentive, discreet and efficient. He always has a word for his guests, knows how to advise them and gather their opinions. In the evening, the atmosphere is even more hushed and intimate. A small, secluded room can accommodate small groups of up to 15 people.

Home cooking

What I like about Yellow is that the menu changes very often. This allows regulars to discover new recipes and flavors every time. Gabriel and his chef draw up the menu using local market produce and ultra-fresh arrivals, and offer dishes that are 100% homemade-even the bread is baked here!

À la Carte

In general, there’s always a choice of 3 starters, 4 main courses (1 white meat, 1 red meat, 1 fish, 1 seafood) and 3 or 4 desserts: 1 chocolate, 1 fruit, 1 cream, a gourmet coffee.

Something for everytaste bud!

A unique wine cellar

If you’re a wine lover, you’re in for a treat! It’s one of Yellow’s great strengths. An incredible choice, vintages you can’t find everywhere. Gabriel’s cellar is the one he talks about best

“I started building up the cellar about 5 years ago. Every year, I travel around France to meet small producers and winemakers, taste and select. I’ve built up some great relationships and exclusive deals. Some of them now make blends just for me, for the Yellow (two wines and two champagnes). I enlarged the restaurant because the cellar was taking up a growing part of the space. We went from 85m2 to 210m2, including 60m2 for the cellar alone!

Gaby also sells his own wine, so if there’s a vintage you like, you can take it home with you!

   Rendez-vous not to be missed!

Gabriel brings his restaurant to life – there’s always something going on at Yellow! We’re all familiar with his Full Moon Dinners, often the occasion for couples to enjoy a romantic evening together. The cellar is showcased with themed dinners, tastings andintroductions to oenology… As there are always plenty of enthusiasts, a word of advice: as soon as the event is announced, don’t delay in making a reservation, just check thecalendar

I ‘m proud of what I’ve achieved, of my career path, of having gone all the way with my project.

The loyalty of my guests is my greatest reward.
