The Convict's House
Historic site and monument, Ruins and remains, Listed or registered (CNMHS)
in Le Diamant
-
This very small house is called "Maison du Bagnard" because of the story of its inhabitant Médard Aribot, who died on October 17, 1973.
-
Former convict, sentenced to life imprisonment in 1925 and freed at the closure of the Cayenne prison in 1945, he built in the 1960s his small wooden house decorated with vivid paintings, enjoying a magnificent view over the Diamond Rock and the channel of Saint Lucia at the foot of Morne Lacher.
Médard Aribot, a somewhat taciturn character, nevertheless remained a renowned and talented self-taught sculptor.
