The Maison de la Bourse (stock exchange house), which dominates Place Bertin, is the identical reconstruction and on its original foundations of the chamber of commerce destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902.
This reconstruction, by Gérard Jacqua, architect of Bâtiments de France, dates from 1992 and aims to restore an emblematic building, a true archetype of Creole architecture and witness to the refinement and prosperity of Saint-Pierre at the end of the 20th century, and to offer the city a place of tourist information, exhibitions and meetings.
Today, it is a municipal centre dedicated to heritage services.
