Savane des Esclaves

Park and garden in Les Trois-Îlets
12 Full-fare
  • Visit the Savane des Esclaves park and gardens: a jewel case of nature. In the heart of Martinique, this is an exceptional site, combining a place of memory, history and heritage in a landscaped setting of over 3 hectares, located at the entrance to the market town of Trois-îlets.

  • Created by Gilbert Larose in 2002, this estate has become a must-see destination for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Martinique's culture and explore the poignant stories of its past. Through Creole gardens, medicinal gardens, orchards and ponds, the site tells the story of the villages built over the years: from the Amerindian communities with the Kalinago village, to the slave huts, via the Rue Case-Nègre and the Place de l'esclave Romain.

Created by Gilbert Larose in 2002, this estate has become a must-see destination for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Martinique's culture and explore the poignant stories of its past. Through Creole gardens, medicinal gardens, orchards and ponds, the site tells the story of the villages built over the years: from the Amerindian communities with the Kalinago village, to the slave huts, via the Rue Case-Nègre and the Place de l'esclave Romain.

In this ornamental and nourishing garden, you'll find all the fruits, vegetables, trees, spices and medicinal plants that make up the Creole orchard. A book of knowledge in the heart of nature

During your visit, you can refresh yourself with a 100% homemade juice or ice cream made with fruit from the orchard and, if you're feeling a bit peckish, take a break at the local vegetable processing house to taste Gilbert's famous cassaves and manioc flour pancakes in sweet or savoury versions.

Along the way, your self-guided tour will be punctuated by audio QR codes, videos, over 40 bilingual panels and a fresco detailing the history of slavery in the West Indies, the revolts, the marronnage, the free people of colour and the abolitionists.

To round off your visit, the shop sells souvenirs, books, spices, jams, prints and other curios made exclusively by local artists and producers. Cocoa stick workshops are held several times a week. As you can see, every visit promises new discoveries.
