In the 18th century, the church was a rectangular building with a sacristy supported as a lamp end. It had a nave without chapel or bell tower: the bells were supported by posts located outside. In 1700, 1800 tiles were imported from Provence to make the tiling.

Completely destroyed by the hurricane of 1766, it was rebuilt in 1778 and equipped with a bell tower, but the building was again ruined by a cyclone in 1817. The reconstruction of a new place of worship caused great financial difficulties. Long polemics between the inhabitants and the apostolic prefect preceded the construction of this church. The works were finally financed thanks to the increase of a tax, proportional to the number of slaves owned.
The present building dates, in its oldest parts, only from 1829.
