Waves coming from the open sea divide on contact with Sainte-Marie Islet, carrying sediments with them, and move towards the protected front of the islet. There they confront each other while leaving a sedimentary deposit.

Tombolo is well visible from January to April. You can then reach the islet by foot at certain times of the day and according to the tides (be careful and think about the return). The visit of the islet is very easy if one does not move away from the footbridges and stairs. It is done in one hour for both "nipples". The NFA has installed information boards and orientation tables...

Trail on the right side of the islet is closed from April 1st to August 31st in order to protect the Roseate Terns, a rare bird species that nests on this part of the islet during this period (Prefectoral biotope protection order on the nesting area).
