Starting point: End of the road leading to Grande Savane.
Access: N2, D10.
The ascent of the volcano on the west side, with the Petit Bonhomme, the quarries and the bay of Saint-Pierre in perspective. A rough progression but most often out of reach of the cloud mass that settles on the mountain. -
The itinerary begins at the end of the concrete road. Go on the path that goes up into the forest, at first the slope is not steep but it will increase throughout the ascent. Cross the footbridge and continue straight ahead. Take the time to stop and look at the beautiful panorama of the surrounding countryside, the Caribbean Sea, the Bay of St. Pierre, the quarries.

About an hour after your departure, you will see on the right "Le Petit Bonhomme", a rocky spur in the shape of a lying man.
At the fork (1), continue straight ahead, pass near the third shelter and climb a first hill as you progress over large boulders. Once on the ridge, walk down to the bottom of a small valley and up to the top of the 1902 dome. Here you are at 1364m altitude, on a clear day you can see the second shelter, the Caldera, and in the distance the Atlantic Ocean. A long descent into the rocky outcrops will take you back to the bottom of the dry pond and you will still have to climb a very steep section towards the plateau of the Palmistes.
At the intersection, turn left, pass in front of the second shelter and continue on the path that goes down and goes around the Caldera. In this section, the trail is on a balcony and the view is magnificent. At the fork, turn right to return to the starting point.
