On June 26th, 2013, the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Aimé Césaire, poet and politician from Martinique, a museum and memorial space was inaugurated in the last office he occupied on the first floor of the former town hall of Fort de France. It is a 112 m² space that Aimé Césaire occupied from 1956 to 1976 as mayor before joining a new office at the Municipal Administrative Centre. He returned to his original work space as Honorary Mayor in 2001.

A place of memory and testimony of his life, the office seeks to restore certain facets of Aimé Césaire's personality through the universe of his last workspace. Kept as it is, the piece that sets Césaire's thought and work in space immerses the audience in the writer's political and diplomatic atmosphere.

Sculptures, paintings, engravings, books and manuscripts, old and contemporary photographs - most often offered by passing visitors - and personal memories make his presence palpable.
Distributed in several showcases dedicated to his life and work, the collection occupies the first floor of the former Town Hall. More than an office, it is history that is showcased with authentic objects including an original edition of "Cahier d'un retour au pays natal" (Notebook of a return to the native country).

The designer of this museum space, Florence Legall, architect and scenographer lives and works in Martinique. A graduate of the Paris La Seine UP9 School of Architecture, she has worked at the Atelier de l'Ile Paris, mainly on cultural equipment projects such as the Cinémathèque française, the Musée d'Orsay and as a scenographer on exhibitions at the Musée Guimet, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Arts et Métiers.
