The site of the Etang des Salines has been designated as a site
"Ramsar*" on 15 September 2008.
(*) Ramsar Convention: Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat. It aims to preserve and enhance wetlands. -
A rich and diversified aquatic population:
Located in the south of Martinique, on the banks of the Saint-Lucia channel, the Etang des Salines occupies an area of 207 hectares. By entering this lagoon, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea produce specific ecological conditions that favour the development of a rich and diverse aquatic population.
An ideal refuge for many species:

The site is the last stop for many species of birds from North America preparing to cross the Saint Lucia Channel. Its mangroves serve as feeding grounds for many invertebrates and other marine species. This area played an important economic role between the 18th and 20th centuries through the production of salt, hence the name given to the pond.
A threatened site:
In addition to the threats posed by pesticides and the runoff of polluting products, tourism is problematic because the site includes one of the most frequented beaches in Martinique with nearly one million visitors per year.
