At the heart of its mission, the Clément Foundation promotes the preservation of Martinique's architectural heritage. It houses major documentary collections, including private archives, a library dedicated to the history of the Caribbean and iconographic collections, and contributes to the dissemination of knowledge through the publication of cultural works.
The Foundation is also committed to promoting contemporary art in the Caribbean region. More than 200 artists have already been welcomed to this heritage site, which houses a contemporary art centre. In March 2023, it will inaugurate the "Pinacothèque", a 550 m2 museum space designed to showcase the works of artists acquired by the Foundation over the years.
This collection, comprising more than 800 works of art by 250 contemporary artists from Martinique and the Caribbean, was built up over a period of 30 years by Bernard Hayot and his Fondation de mécénat. The two monumental glass roofs of the Pinacothèque offer a breathtaking view of the tropical garden and the majestic trees of the Habitation.
Each year, the Foundation organises a new season of exhibitions, open free of charge to the public and schools, and publishes catalogues to accompany these events. Its support for artistic creation is also reflected in the regular acquisition of works with a Caribbean connection, which are added to a collection that is regularly exhibited.
A wide range of events are on offer throughout the year:
- Art exhibitions
- Guided tours of exhibitions (according to a fixed schedule)
- Creative workshops for children and adults (on a fixed schedule and by prior arrangement)
- Guided tours for schoolchildren (by prior arrangement only) see the "Events" section
