Museum of History and Ethnography

Museum in Fort-de-France
  • Located in the middle of a garden of mango trees and mahoganies, the building that houses the Museum of History and Ethnography dates from 1887. It is one of the oldest villas downtown and was the home of the Director of the Artillery.

A living room, a dining room, a bedroom and a bathroom recreate a late 19th century bourgeois interior, with furniture and everyday objects characteristic of that period. Many traditional architectural decorative elements can be admired, bringing to life the atmosphere of yesteryear: louvered doors, moulded frames, sunburst transoms, etc.

Old documents, complemented by paintings and engravings lining the walls, retrace some of the island's great historical episodes. In the living room, a series of engravings and paintings evoke the history of Saint-Pierre, and in the dining room, that of Fort-de-France. Galleries are devoted to Creole jewellery and traditional costumes.

The museum is housed in a beautiful mansion dating from 1887, which was lucky enough to escape the great fire that ravaged the capital of Martinique in 1890, during which no less than 1,600 houses, almost the entire city, fell victim to the flames.
