Its breathtaking restoration and the fact that it is now open to the general public are designed to raise awareness of the history of cane sugar and agricultural rum in Martinique. In its early days, it produced sugar and later pure sugar cane juice used to distil tafia, the ancestor of rum.
Set in the middle of 1.5 hectares of sugar cane plantations, the Habitation offers eight fully renovated tour buildings that follow the historic route: from the wooden mills used to crush the cane and extract the juice to the guildhall, its paddle wheels, its purgery, its distillation stills, its boilers and cellars, and its shop, making it an exceptional site.
A true immersion through time...
The journey ends with a sales and tasting area for Cuvées La Salle, bottled by hand and sealed with wax. They are on sale in this shop and in that of the Saint-James distillery.
Just inside the entrance to the house, don't forget to visit the small museum dedicated to coffee growing in Martinique.
