A maritime excursionOut and about with Denis ExcursionsDiscover the islets and the white seabed

On the road with Denis Excursions

Feel like escaping! Today, we’re heading for the islets of François and Robert for an excursion to the white seabed, Josephine’s bathtub and the islet Chancel, home to Martinique’s endemic iguanas. I chose to board the boat of Davy, Denis’s son from ” Denis Excursions”, for a half-day trip, although I know he also organizes full-day trips with meals.

Departure from Marina du François

Meet at the fishing port of Le François at 9am. Boarding takes place on the small pontoon to the right of the main pontoon, just past Maxipech’. Davy gives us a warm welcome and invites us aboard.

Sailing between the islets of François and Robert

We leave the marina and set course for the islets. Knowing the bays of Le François and Le Robert like the back of his hand, he navigates between the cayes and islets. This is an opportunity to learn a little more, through local anecdotes and legends, about the history of the islets we’re discovering, such asîlet Métrente,îlet Anonyme,îlet Long,îlet Pelé,îlet Lagrotte,îlet Petit Piton,îlet Madame,îlet Oscar andîlet Thierry.

Most are fishermen’s huts or the weekend homes of the lucky few. The panorama is exceptionally beautiful, and you’ll come across fishermen, kayakers and yachters…

   Life in Martinique !

Islet Chancel, a historic site

and theLesser Antillean Iguana Reserve!

The tour continues to the islets of Le Robert, approaching Islet Chancel, the largest of Martinique’s islets (2 km by 900 m). It’s also one of the best known, with ruins of a sugar dwelling,a pottery and a lime kiln. You can also observe the Lesser Antillean iguana(iguana délicatissima), a protected endemic species, in its natural habitat.

We go ashore and Davy gives us a guided tour of the site’s history and heritage. The ruins give an idea of the size of the dwelling in the 18th century. We continue through the remains towards two impressive trees, the Zamana and the Figuier maudit, which are among the tallest trees in the West Indies. We take the opportunity to take a photo of ourselves, suddenly feeling very small!

And we‘re lucky enough to see the iguanas! Young green specimens bask in the sun, while older ones can be seen perched in the trees. What strange little creatures!

Les Fonds Blancs

and Josephine's Bathtub

After this highly instructive visit, we continue our stroll towards the white seabed of Le François, and more particularly towards the famous Baignoire de Joséphine, between the islets Oscar and Thierry.

The boat glides on the azure sea under a bright sun, the air is charged with the salty fragrance of the ocean, the caresses of the trade winds bring freshness, around us the water sparkles with a thousand lights, with the reflection of the sun dancing on the waves. On board, Caribbean music plays in rhythm, in unison with this heavenly setting. We glimpse starfish in the sea grass beds, sea urchins, the coral reef… We pass by Trapèze beach and îlet Madame, and it’s just magnificent!

It’s midday and time for home-made planteur and accras! We’re at La Baignoire de Joséphine, waist-deep in water, in the middle of the ocean, enjoying this aperitif. The atmosphere is top-notch, the disconnection total, laughter, good humor, sharing, exchanges and music are at the rendezvous. The place, though busy, remains sublime. As for the reverberation, it’s intense, so don’t forget your hats and caps!

We returned to the fishing port to the sound of music, with stars in our eyes and memorable shots in our cameras!

Thanks to you and your team Davy for this great morning, very professional, very nice, very cool, we love you! It was great!

   Denis Excursions days

  • Davy also offers full-day excursions, with the same program as the half-day, but with a longer itinerary and more ilets to discover. The direction of the walk can vary depending on how busy the sites are, so you can enjoy the peace and quiet. A Creole lunch (if you want lobster, please specify when booking) will be served on a pretty little beach on îlet Long. In the afternoon, you can relax and swim!
  • Denis and Davy can draw up a personalized itinerary, take the boats out for private use and organize à la carte services to suit your wishes.
