Discovery diving in the north of Martiniquewith the A Papa D'lo club

A baptism of diving with “A Papa D’lo Plongée”.

Today marks a big first for me: my first dive! Excitement is running high as I head for Saint-Pierre, renowned for its diving sites. My destination? Club A Papa D’lo, a name that already sounds like a promise of underwater adventure.

In the heart of Saint-Pierre

at the foot of Montagne Pelée

Located just a few meters from the Saint-Pierre market, the path to get there runs along the seafront, offering spectacular views. On one side, the clear waters of the Caribbean, on the other the majestic Montagne Pelée.

As soon as we arrive, the warm welcome from Serge, the owner, and Aurélien, our instructor, immediately immerses us in the friendly atmosphere of Club A Papa D’lo.

A reception area and a second one for our equipment are quickly put at our disposal, with baskets to store our personal belongings. Once we’d donned our wetsuits, we headed for the “Papa Dlo” boat a Dervinis 1000 on board which can accommodate up to 27 divers – a short swim away. On board, we get to know the other divers of all levels.

Diving Spots

Club A Papa D'lo

Where do the dives take place?

  • The A Papa D’lo club has selected 20 of the most beautiful dive spots in the Caribbean between Le Carbet and the Perle rock: the Perle, the Sous-marin, the Babodi Canyons, the Citadelle, the Trou Bleu, the Kaye Maréchal, the Kaye Pothuau and the wrecks in the Bay of Saint Pierre.
  • Centrally located in the bay of Saint-Pierre, the club also offers shore dives to discover the Tombant and Plateau des Ancres.

We’re off! Today’s dive is planned at the ” KayePothuau ” reserve in Le Carbet. While the “autonomous” divers get ready for an hour of underwater discovery accompanied by an instructor, the “baptêmes” like us get a complete introduction to the world of diving. Aurélien takes the time to explain how the equipment works, how to adjust our masks, how to communicate underwater and, above all,how to manage the pressure in our ears, as well as reminding us of the essentialsafety rules.

Luca, aged 9, is the first to embark on the adventure for a 20-minute session, closely followed by Manon, for whom it’s also a first. Their experiences, filled with wonder and discovery, motivate me and reassure me a little. Finally, the moment arrives, my eyes widen, I discover a previously unknown universe… I’m floating, weightless, in the midst of all the underwater life that surrounds me.

“It’s simply enchanting! “

Extraordinary flora and fauna!

We swim slowly, I feel no fear, Aurelien inquires about my well-being, I respond with a sign that everything is perfect. And above all, not the slightest pain in my eardrums… It’s great! After twenty minutes of immersion surrounded by multicolored fish: yellow giltheads, parrotfish, sergeant majors, damselfish, yellow-head wrasse, angelfish, lionfish, boxfish, diodon, trumpetfish, spotted moray eels, octopus and even lobsters…. amidst corals, Neptune’s brains, sea fan corals, gorgonians, sea feathers, anemones, tubular sponges, barrel sponges… I climb back on board, meeting up with the other divers.

A real moment of sharing

Back at the club, we put away our equipment, which is then placed in cleaning and disinfecting bins. We then share a moment of conviviality together over a small Planteur, and each receives a diploma

As someone who was apprehensive about diving, I’d like to thank A Papa D’lo Plongée, Serge, Aurélien and the whole team, who reassured me and gave me a fabulous time. It was a first for me, but not the last… There are still so many dive sites to discover in Martinique!
