2 Buggy tours with Martinique Buggy

Today, it’s time for adventure. I want to discover new landscapes and, above all, I want to have fun on a buggy. Imagine yourself behind the wheel of a buggy, a light but powerful all-terrain vehicle, ready to tackle the tracks, trails and steep dirt roads in the north and south of the island.

My southern Buggy tour

in Sainte-Anne, Martinique

My appointment is in Sainte-Anne, at Martinique Buggy de Trial Caraïbe. To get there, take the entrance leading to Club Med Les Boucaniers, next to Pointe Marin beach. The place is easy to spot: the buggies are already out and waiting for us.

We form a group of five machines, guided by Mano. His warm, smiling welcome already puts us in the mood.

He briefs us on the operation of the buggies, safety, the basics of driving and the rules to follow, highlighting the “dos and don’ts”.Once we’re all ready, we set off in single file. Our adventure begins just after we pass a vacation home 2 minutes from the Pointe Marin beach, with its beautifully flowered facades and gardens.

The sound of the engine breaks the silence of nature, promising a morning full of thrills. We follow Mano as he takes us through changing landscapes, offering a new wonder to discover at every turn. Trails wind through paths, where trees form a natural tunnel, their branches filtering the sunlight. The ground is strewn with leaves, branches and pebbles, creating a natural carpet that our wheels grip with ease. Then the vegetation opens out onto fields and savannahs , with the sea as far as the eye can see, offering a magnificent spectacle.

Crève-Cœur, the ruins of a sugar dwelling

On our way, we stop off at a historic site, theCrève-Cœur sugar dwelling, built in the 18th century. As we enter the ruins, we can make out the main house, consisting of 5 buildings, and the remains ofan enormous cattle mill measuring 60 meters in circumference. Cheese trees have taken root, surrounding the buildings; it’ s impressive! The guide tells us the history of the site, and points out that it’s also the starting point for the Crève-Cœur hike, with its reward being a breathtaking 360-degree view of Sainte-Anne, both on the Caribbean and Atlantic sides, and the Bay of Le Marin.

After a few exchanges between us, we set off again. We set off along stony paths, negotiating tight bends (nothing dangerous, I assure you).

And what about the views! Between the Crève-Cœur volcano, Anse Michel at Cap Chevalier, Morne Larcher, Diamant rock and Sainte-Anne bay with a magnificent view of Pointe Marin beach.

It’s a feast for the eyes!

As for the buggy, I think it’s great. The adventure ends with a return to the starting point, where the buggy riders share their experiences. It’s at this point that Mano tells us that he’s also offering a tour starting from Basse-Pointe, so we’ll see you next week.

My northern Buggy tour

in Basse-Pointe, Martinique

We set off from the former Plantation Leyritz hotel on the Atlantic side of the island, where Aurélien welcomes us. After getting to grips with the buggy, we set off on our adventure!

In the heart of the tropical forest

We enter the rainforest, an ecosystem vibrant with biodiversity. The trees are majestic, with dense canopies that filter the sun’s rays. In the heart of this lush vegetation, we cross rivers, fords, cane fields, banana plantations and pineapple plantations. The backdrop is the majestic Montagne Pelée volcano.

The scenery is superb, and so are the viewpoints… Today the sky is so clear that we can see the neighboring island of Dominica. Aurelien also took us to discover a river and, when it rained, a waterfall hidden in the vegetation, which some of us took the opportunity to cool off in. Aurélien punctuates our walk with explanations of the different cultures of the north, and the history of Martinique, in a cheerful and friendly atmosphere.

Distillerie J.M

One of Martinique’sfinest distilleries

The tour ends with a visit to the Rhumerie J.M, a magnificent distillery with a majestic cellar, a remarkable garden and top-quality agricultural rums.

With the buggy I’ve learned to anticipate obstacles, play with the terrain and overcome challenges like a true adventurer, leaving me with a feeling of accomplishment and the desire to do it all over again!
