In an old distillery, the Maison de la Canne offers a wide panorama of the multiple and complex relationships that have been established between a land, a plant and a people during more than three centuries of sugar economy from the end of the 17th to the 20th century.
Located in the old Mario distillery dating from the beginning of the 20th century, it traces the evolution of the sugar economy in the context of slavery in plantations, then from the middle of the 19th century in the central factories.
Sugar cane has left its hegemonic mark on most aspects of life on the island, shaping settlement and society, shaping landscapes and mentalities, inspiring music, fiction and cinema. It is fully, for Martinique, a plant of civilization.
Despite the collapse of recent decades, sugar cane remains the second largest agricultural production on the island thanks to rum.
In 1996, Martinique's agricultural rum obtained an appellation of origin (AOC). This quality label, linked to a terroir, is inseparable from ancestral know-how.
