Habitation Saint-Étienne: A jewel in the heart of Martinique

Located between Saint-Joseph and Gros-Morne, in the heart of Martinique, Habitation Saint-Étienne is much more than a distillery. It is an emblematic site, the birthplace of HSE rums and a living witness to a unique heritage listed in the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques (ISMH).

This must-see tour immerses you in the heritage, culture and beauty of the island. A popular destination for history buffs and spirit tourists. Unique architecture The Habitation Saint-Étienne is a masterpiece of 19th-century industrial architecture. - The Creole column - The old distillery - The façade of the distillery, punctuated by 28 arched windows The Habitation's remarkable garden, adorned with sculptures, is an invitation to contemplate. The boutique "Les Foudres", named in homage to the famous writer Édouard Glissant, houses temporary collections of works of art by Caribbean artists. A bit of history: A rich cultural heritage The Habitation Saint-Étienne, originally the La Maugée sugar refinery (400 hectares, early 19th century), became an agricultural distillery in 1882 under Amédée Aubéry, who modernised the site with railways and hydraulic power. Managed by the Simonnet family from 1909, the distillery declined in the 1980s. Bought out in 1994 by Yves and José Hayot, the HSE brand was reborn and the site, now restored, is a jewel of Martinique's 19th-century industrial architecture, listed on the ISMH.
